Dr. So published a paper regarding the outcomes of ankle arthrodesis conversion to total ankle arthroplasty. Indications are limited, but patients should have the presence of a fibula with ankle arthrodesis malunion, nonunion or degenerative disease to the adjacent joints. Outcomes do improve after conversion, but not the same compared to primary total ankle arthroplasty. This procedure can improve pain and function, but patients should know the complications as well as risks and benefits to this procedure.
